You will be making a short scene from your IR Book this week and next, while reviewing media arts concepts. Describe a scene from your IR Book in which the character reveals a deep emotional truth. What happens to the character? How is the audience informed? Is there dialog between characters?
Describe the mood of the scene. How would lighting help suggest a mood?
Where would you place characters within the scene?
How would you shoot the scene in terms of camera angles, framing and composition?
The scene I will choose is the scene where he has his weak, small horses, and his friends have stronger horses that all the girls go after. The mood of the scene is a little sad. White Man's Dog will be on the far right side, and it will be dark, and on the far left side, it would be bright. I would shoot it with a wide shot, so you're able to see both sides of each character.
ReplyDeleteMy book is "Fool's Crow" by James Welch. A scene we could do is when Yellow Kidney, a chief, comes back after a long absence and shows his tribe what happened to him during and after a raid. The audience would see him put his hands up and they would see that he has no fingers because they were chopped off by their rivals. There would be some dialogue but the actions would be louder than the words. The mood would be somber and we would do that by using reflectors to make the scene fairly dark. We would also try and take out as much color as possible by using walls as backgrounds. I would place Yellow Kidney in the front and the people behind him would be blurred to focus on him and what has happened to him. I would use depth of field a lot as well as some low angles and close ups to emphasize the impact of the scene.
ReplyDeleteThe fire scene where the boy calls her a nigger and she gets really mad and then she continues to try and find out where she is and how to get out and stay safe and she is starting to realize whats the connection with the boy. There would be a lot of close ups and also from far away so we can have a big picture of the fire and the scene
ReplyDeleteScene when the Chen the bandit kidnaps laulu.
ReplyDeleteDads begging not to take her but at the end just gives her up for 2 bags of seed.
Lighting might be dark it's scary ish.
-Dads on the ground
-Lalu's on Chen's back.
When the bandit drops the rice bag it we would follow the bag down and show all the rice falling out.
When White Man's Dog returns to his village, his father explains to him that Yellow Kidney's actions were not his fault. The audience is informed of his father's personality by his dialog. It is dark and eery. Father on the left and son on the right. using medium, close up, and over the shoulder shots.
ReplyDeleteWhen Linda is sold off to Mr. Sands. She is terrified and its an emotional scene due to the attachment of the reader to the character. Linda tells the story in fist person POV. It would probably be on the darker scale, and the characters would be looking solemn, and camera angles would definitely be looking down on Linda, making her look small and looking up on Mr. Sands portraying him as ruling and controlling compared to the tininess on Linda.
ReplyDeleteA scene, should be where Dana plunges into the rabbit hole and time travels to the past. The audience is informed by intuitive clothes, such as old-style clothes, and old language. There is limited dialogue. The lighting should change from a nice, well-lit room, to a dimly lit area, with only a key light, to create a spooky effect. I would shoot the scene using tight, closer shots. I would also create a hurried effect, using fast editing, and some blurred effects.
ReplyDeleteThe scene in Kindred where Dana first apparates into the 1800's and immediately saves young Rufus' life is a very key point in the start of her emotional struggle that comes with unavoidable and unwanted time travel.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't until after she's saved Rufus that she realizes that she's far from home.
The mood is confusing and almost desperate as time swallows Dana and spits her out in the opportune moment to save Dana's ancestor so that she may exist herself.
It's a dark living room and then a bright sunny day in the south where a stupid little boy struggles in the shallow current.
Dana would be seen close-up in a confused heap on the grass and then hearing the shouting, would see Rufus for the first time. Instinct and adrenaline following would make for a quick blur of motion into the water, her pulling his limp body out, and her recalling CPR. Eye level and low angles on Dana and High angles of Rufus.
In my book "Fool's Crow," I would have the my scene be about the time when the White Man's Dog steals horses from the neighboring tribes. The mood of the scene would be very fast and heroic as if the character is jeopardizing his life to steal these horses to show his manliness. The lighting would be somewhat bright shining down from behind the trees onto him as he rides his horse through the forest. I would do a camera angle at the side of the horse and have both the horse and the camera moving at the same time. The composition would be more lighter than darker to show that the character is doing something beneficial and good. There would not be dialogue with the main character in the scene but maybe some dialogue between the other tribes indians as the main character is sneaking past them.
ReplyDeleteOne scene can be when White Dogs man comes back home and everyone is cheering because theyre proud of him. It would be a glorious scene with bright lights and loud crowds. The dad should smiling and look proud. We can use closeups on the faces and wide shot of the crowds and put some gladiator kind of music in the background.
ReplyDeleteA scene that is interesting is Dana rescuing Rufus from drowning, right after she goes back in time. This is a series of interactions where Dana has to save the life of Rufus, when in danger, will inadvertently pull Dana back in time. The mood of the scene has to be tense and alert, and having the correct lighting would portray the mood needed for the scene. I would place Rufus in the water, and Dana next to the water. To show Rufus drowning, I would have the camera in the water to show Rufus drowning, and have mostly action shots to show the danger and alertness of Dana.
ReplyDeleteThis scene occurs after Dana travels back in time for the second time. She had just put out the fire and is about to question Rufus.
ReplyDeleteThis scene has intense dialogue between Dana and Rufus as they try to figure out what has happened to them both.
The room is dimly lit while outside the window it is dark.
The characters would be slightly distant because they are not sure if they can yet trust each other.
When Yellow kidney returns crippled, White Man's Dog feels responsible because of dream that happened beforehand. Rides-at-the-door convinces him otherwise with a very emotional speech. he is told a wise saying and consoled from being guilty for no reason. the audience is informed through past events and dialogue.there is is dialogue. first dark because white man's dog feels responsible but later happier because he knows there was nothing he could have done. low lighting at the beginning, gold lighting at the end. i would place them arms distance apart infront of a wild area. over the shoulders, close ups, wides, and POV. in a woody area.
ReplyDeleteFool's Crow is a novel where the setting is wide open expanses. Any film about it would include wide fields and expanses. I would include the scene where they are stealing horses because I feel like that is one of the most important scenes, and it would include the plain aspect. Since we can not use real horses, maybe we could make it seem like it was a huge plain even more by using stuffed animals or toys in the grass for the landscape shots. THe close ups and dialogue could still be real action, we just wouldn't show the horses.
ReplyDeleteBook: "Thousand Pieces of Gold"
ReplyDeleteScene: Lalu is sold to Chen for one bag of seed; Lalu's father argues that she is worth 2 bags, not 1.
Mood of scene: Tense, anxious, sad, bitter, angry
Lighting: Fairly dim inside the hut that the scene takes place in
Character position: Chen is portrayed as towering over both Lalu and her father, who are both crouched in front of Chen, as if trying to shrink away from him; in final scene, Lalu's father shoves Lalu to Chen, who in turn lobs one bag of seed at Lalu's father; After the father's protests, another bag is lobbed at him, and Chen whisks Lalu away; Whole scene should feel like its moving very fast
Camer angles: Over-the-shoulder shots of Chen and Lalu and her father
For final shot, close up of Lalu's face; very few shots of Lalu's father's face
In this scene, the character is in a raiding party who are stealing a lot of horses. While they are stealing them, the main character spots a young indian boy who would warn the rest of the village. The main character rides over to the young boy boy and stabs him multiple times in the back. The mood of this scene is depressing that he just killed a little kid but also excitement that he has gotten his first kill. The lighting would be a mixture of both dark and light to express the characters mixed emotions. I would place the main character in the middle of the village being praised, but he would not be happy. I would shoot the main character at a high angle to show that the killing of the child is bearing down on him.
ReplyDeleteIn the book "Kindred" by Octavia Butler. A scene that i would like to show would be the time traveling confusion when Dana is going back and forth between time periods. The mood would be misty and confusing. The lighting could help emphasize this by being dim. Our characters would be positioned in a home. We would use a skewed angle to portray confusion. But, over all it should portray confusion.
ReplyDeleteIn the novel "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl", Harriet Jacobs describes a scene where she is repeatedly beaten and yelled at by her abusive master, Flint. There should be several close ups of Mr. Flint while he is in a rage, and of Harriet Jacobs to show the pain and suffering on her face. An over the shoulder of Mr. Flint facing a beaten Harriet would be very emotional, albeit painful. The lighting would be dark to reflect a somber mood. The characters would be shot with many medium and close shots to see the emotion on their faces and the violence of the abuse. The framing should just include the two characters, and the angles of shooting should be pointed upwards towards Flint to show that he is a powerful master.
ReplyDeleteA Scene that our group could do is the rape scene where Yellow Kidney assaults a random girl. If i were to shoot this shot, I would have a close up shot of the girl's face and the transition to his, then i would keep that shot and make Kidney jump. Then i would transition to Kidney on top of the girl and taking off to inexplicably show what happened. I would keep the lighting shown down at only one angle of light and have the face of Yellow Kidney in that 1 beam of light for the whole of that time. Then when he starts to stand up, he will go back into the light.
ReplyDeleteTHis scene from Kindred would be the scene in which dana travels for the first time. Lighting would be bright at first. Dana and Kevin would be standing face to face when suddenly, mid-sentence, Dana would disappear. A wine glass she was holding in hand would fall to the ground and shatter in a flurry of flickering lights. The lights would be dim to dark during the flickering. Characters would act frantically.
ReplyDeleteThe scene from 1000 pieces of gold would probably be when Lalu enters the US and the girls separate whether they have papers or not and prepare for the auction the next day. The main part of this scene is when the dark skinned girl is talking to Lalu and telling her how she is lucky because others have it worse. The lighting would be pretty dark and the overall tone would be discouraged and the last line would be Lalu saying "What does that change except my price?" then a fade to black.
ReplyDeleteA good scene to do from the book Kindred would be the prologue when Dana looses her arm. It would be shot with a lot of contrasting light to show a dream like world. There would be a lot of revealing pan shots especially towards the arm. THere wont be much dialogue as it will be mostly revealed by closeup facial expressions. Characters would look troubled.
ReplyDeleteThe scene that rides-at-the-door is telling White Man's Dog that it is not his fault that yellow kidney has gotten his fingers cut off and has small pox. it is because of his greed.
ReplyDeletegood work :)
DeleteIn the book Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs describes a scene where she is beaten and yelled at by Mr. Flint. There should be several close ups of Mr. Flint while he is beating Harriet. You could show the pain of her face when she is beaten. The background could be dark to show a dark and sad mood.
ReplyDeleteMy book is Kindred. I think I would do the scene where Dana first travels back in time. She would be talking to her husband in a warm and cozy house, and then she would faint suddenly and be laying on a grass field by the river. The light would be bright and Dana would have great lighting on her. Then she would save Rufus in a rushed manner.
ReplyDeleteI would choose the scene where Dr. Flint is beating Harriet, because it shows how terrible of a life Harriet is living, and the sacrifices she is making for her family.
ReplyDeleteThe mood seems to be gloomy and I could shoot this in a house or a backyard like scene when it's not light outside to display a sad environment.
The scene I would imagine recreating would be when White Man's Dog saved the Skunk Bear from the white man's trap. I would use an opening shpt with a high level of aperture to make it reminiscent of the snow world. I would also have a changing depth of field shot to initially focus on White Man's Dog, and then focus on the Skunk bear.
ReplyDeleteIn the novel "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl", Harriet Jacobs describes a scene where she is repeatedly beaten and yelled at by her abusive master, Flint. There should be several close ups of Mr. Flint while he is in a anger and of Harriet Jacobs to show the pain and suffering on her face. An over the shoulder of Mr. Flint facing a beaten Harriet would be very emotional, albeit painful. The lighting would be dark to reflect a somber mood. The characters would be shot with many short and close shots to see the emotion on their faces and the cruelty of the abuse.
ReplyDeletethere is a scene in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl where Harriet is being abused by her owner. This scene shows the how hard it is for Harriet and how much hardship she has to go through. I would shoot the scene from a low oblique angle. to show fear and despair.
ReplyDeleteIn Kindred, Dana would go back into time for the second time and see Rufus, except he is much older, she prevents him from burning the house down and they get into a conversation. Dana finds out where and when she is and she is very distressed. Also the talk they have regarding the N-word would be included in the scene.
ReplyDeleteA good scene would be when Dana gets dizzy and appears in Rufus' room where she finds the curtains burning. I would use dim light to really enfasize the fire. There would be panic in the scene and after she throws the curtains out the window it would be really dark for suspense.
ReplyDeleteWhen Dana loses her arm at the beginning, it is a very powerful scene. It would start off with just a shot of her terrified face, the of her arm, than switch to a shot at the hospital
ReplyDeleteFor Kindred the scene Dana travels for the first time, Dana's view could be very bright with very clean camera angles. From Kevin's view, the tone would be more sinister, with darker lighting, and shakier camera angles.
ReplyDeleteThe scence is were Ralph hurt his leg. Also what Dana says to Ralph how "she didn't like being called trash and how she wouldn't call Ralph trash". I would make the scene really light and comfortable. It would be really light and angelic to symbolize the kindness that Dana wants to show Ralph.
ReplyDeleteThe scene from thousand pieces of gold when Lalu is being judged by the madame is the scene that we would like to do. The madame is looking at her feet and asking her why they are unbinded and so big. She tells her that she had to help on the farm. The madame says she would never get picked for anything but the person that wants to buy her will be from America. The lightning would be bright on madame and dark on Lalu to make Madame seem like a bigger power.
ReplyDeleteIn Kindred, the author describes the strong relationship between the woman and Kevin. Although he was the cause of her missing arm, she loves him so much to cover up for him and protect him. The darker the lighting, the darker the mood, and the lighter the lighting the happier the mood. I would place these characters in a darker lighting with flashing lights and blurry scenes.
ReplyDeleteFools Crow: Yellow Kidney has just returned from his capture at the Crow. He reveals that as punishment for his actions, the Crow warriors have removed all of his fingers; he also reveals that Fast Horse is at fault for his capture by taunting the Crow warriors during their raid. At this point, Fast Horse is feeling a great deal of shame and is exiled from the tribe, so a darker scene with shading would help set the 'dark' mood. All of the characters would also be positioned near each other except for Fast Horse who is facing them.
ReplyDeleteOne scene in the book " Kindred" includes the chapter Fire, When Dana and Rufus get to know each other better through ancestry connections. This scene could shows how African Americans lived and struggled through suppressed society and environment.
ReplyDeleteMy scene from "Fool's Crow" would be when White Man's Dog is shot by Bull Shield. It is very sad as he is triumphant until he is shot. There is only muffled dialogue as Fox Eyes tries to help him, but then he tries to kill Bull Shield but is killed in the process the lighting would be dark and cloudy to enhance the sadness. White Man's Dog would be in the foreground with the action in the center of the scene. Most of the shots will be from the ground, over the shoulder of White Man's Dog.
