Subject: Community Service Opportunity
Hello!
As Event Chair for the American Cancer Society's
Saratoga Relay for Life, I have a great opportunity for SHS MAP
students to put together a community service video that we can use for
future events, put on our website and upload to the
ACS YouTube channel. Our Relay is a day-long event on July 19 and is
held at St. Andrew’s Crestbrook Field.
Relay is a community event, not a race unless
you count the race to find a cure for cancer. We celebrate our
community's cancer survivors, remember our friends and family who lost
their battle with cancer, and fight back against cancer
by raising funds for research and providing services to those with
cancer. Relay is a celebration of hope complete with live music,
Bollywood dance performers, a magician, raffles, food and fun!
This video project should capture the spirit of
Relay and the reasons why people participate in Relay for Life.
Additionally, I would love to have a student do still photography
through out the day and evening. Another opportunity would
be to write an article based on survivor’s stories or about the event
itself.
Our Relay webpages are:
http://www.relayforlife.org/saratogaca and
https://www.facebook.com/saratogarelay. I hope this community
project is something you would consider for your students. It's a human
interest story about resiliency, hope and rememberance at best. It a
documentary about a volunteer run community event
at the very least.
Additionally, it would be terrific to have some
teams from Saratoga High School participating. In the past we have
groups from the music department, ASB and other campus groups form
teams. Teams have walkers in shifts of an hour or so
around the track throughout the day and evening. All teams are
encouraged to fundraise but not a necessity, and team members can camp
out overnight in a safe setting. Our Relay needs the energy that young
people bring, and our entertainment is geared toward
them. Our ACS Representative, Tima Maharaj, and I would gladly come
talk to you, other administration, ASB, MAP or other student groups
about Relay.
Thank you for your consideration. I hope to hear
back from you. Should you have questions, please contact me at 408
472-1851 or via email.
Sincerely,
Debbie Manser
