Icon/Poets

Blogspot Question of the day: Read Cinematography: Theory and Practice pg. 38-41 (under production links on right side). When you have read the excerpt, look at this link which is an excerpt from Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards. Take any 3 shots (by timecode) and describe the concepts of visual organization, visual weight and visual tension apparent in your selected shots.

 ICONS:

Mozilla has released a new mashup tool called Popcorn Maker. Check it out here

Follow the tutorial here.

Popcorn Ted Talk (2012, Software Preview)

Classroom Assignment:
Please collaborate with others from your Icon groups and experiment with Popcorn as a tool for future projects. Icon groups could use Popcorn as a way to create a mashup that integrates not only multiple videos, but other media content as well including maps, websites, photographs, audio and more.

Icon groups may begin to gather content for your mashup right away.

POETS:
  1. Filmmakers on poets projects will continue to look at the visuals capable with After Effects. Please look at the following tutorial and re-create a similar scene using 3D camera view and a simulated effects such as rain. Please check in with Mrs. L. when you have completed the tutorial and have applied that knowledge to a photo.
  2. Please access this file on the google drive. This file is a drawing file that can be shared. It is the basis for the construction of a storyboard for your visual interpretation. When you have your poem selected, you will spread the lines, stanzas out over this storyboard and start to create visuals that will help tell the story. Before shooting video or gathering photos, it is important to record your narrative to obtain duration of lines and stanzas. This will allow you to create a storyboard with timecode ins/outs and set durations.
  3. Poets will create a detailed storyboard for their poem to be handed in by the end of the day Monday Nov 18th. Poets should also hand in a production plan that details a shot sheet that details location and schedule of production. Do backwards planning. Determine how much time you will need for the final edit and plan backwards to create a realistic production schedule.

By Friday you will narrow down your media assignment to the poem you will visually interpret. This week you will spend preparing for that visualization by learning more about what After Effects can do and if it might be a useful tool in the art of visualization.

  1. 1) 4 seconds to 8 seconds they have a very dark shot and a very bright light down the middle of them. They wanted to show some seriousness in the way they were talking from an over the shoulder shot and the person facing us seemed to gave control of the situation. 2) 4:45 i like the way the camera pans down to show that some men are underneath them, listening to something very important that is being said. 3) 5:08 i like the light they have at the corner into their eyes as they are listening and looking through the cracks.

  2. Shot 1 (3:40): This shot shows the two people sitting side by side. The light coming from the roof illuminates the table which then produces an eerie glow on the two. This also blackens the background, which adds depth to the background. Also the area where the Nazi officer is is significantly darker than the area of the farmer; it's almost as if the officer is coming out of the darkness.

Shot Two (4:41): This shot uses lines to show a plot detail. The camera follows the farmer's posture, the lines on his corduroy pants, to the basement, which shows a family of hiding Jews. This shot is very interesting as it uses lines to direct the attention of the viewer.

Shot Three (10:32): This shot shows the true nature of the officer. It shows him against a black background and what he believes in. Then the camera slowly zooms in to show him sort of being pulled back in.

  3. At 3:55 the camera begins to move, making the scene more dramatic. At 4:33 the camera shows the paper to show the audience what he is writing, and it focuses on the ages of the kids to make it sad. At 4:45 there is a revealing shot showing the Jewish people under the table under the floor boards.

  4. 1) at 4:30 where there is a list of the names has a depth of field.
You can actually read the name which seems more realistic than just lines. It's like a grocery list and the guy is hunting them; you can see the texture of the paper.
    2) 5:07 This is the scene where you see the eyes behind the floorboards. there is a lot of contrast due to the floor board being dark and their skin and eyes just being so bright.
    3) 9:12 uses rule of thirds, and the officer seems very leaned back. It is dark except for the middle is bright.

  5. 00:02 Lit shot of glass with 2 people in the dark area, shows the tension betwen the two people.
01:10 balanced shot in color and light
05:10 visual tension between the floor and the eyes. rhythm and contrast

  6. from 4:40 - 4:56 they use a very interesting shot that makes the camera go under the floorboards and have a reveal of the Jews under the floorboard.

They have many shots at a certain camera and that reflect similar to that of 0:56. Here they have the lighting filling up the side of the face and the desk he is working on; the rest of the background is very dark. This adds emphasize to the table and the talker and tries to make the background look useless

From 5:41 and its repetition of scenes, the background is lit up and you can see much of the things in the background. This adds a feeling of being more at a home rather than a harsh interview.

  7. There was the flickering of the lights throughout causing some scenes to be darker than others, there was the dark lighting with streaks of light coming through the floor boards revealing only the eyes of those hidden in the floor, and towards the end there were long close ups of the faces making it a tense stand off

  8. 1) At 10:26 the shot is a very dark background with little light on the mans face, there is a slow dolly in, and you can tell that the director wanted the scene to be very serious, as shown in the character's facial expression and the camera angle.
    2) At 4:40 to 5:00 the downwards panning shot from the table to beneath the floorboards showing all the hidden Jewish people, the light from above the floorboards shines onto the eyes of the hidden people showing that their not bad people just because they're hiding and also the director tries to show the audience that sometimes what you're looking for is right beneath your nose.
    3) 0:00 and on, the two men talking at the table with the direct light in the middle of them and darkness around them shows that the conversation between the two men is important because the director uses the light to direct the viewers eyes to the center of the conversation and it helps lure the viewers in.

  9. Shot 1 (4:41): The camera pans down and it's interesting how the camera follows down with the lines of the corduroy pants. It really shows a different light as once the camera pans down you can see the family hiding. It's a sense of directionality.
Shot 2 ( 3:50): This shot shows the power the officer has as the camera pans around the back to the left side of the officer. It kind of looks like the farmer is trying all his power to plead and be safe. The officer is dimly lit which represents a darker figure and the farmer is lighted a lot brighter.
Shot 3 (10:32) : This shot shines the true light on the officer. This scene is when you can see that the officer is finally getting to the point with the intense shot. The camera slowly zooms in into the interrogative questions.

( http://media.tumblr.com/c3b94ad0e7ebffde45cedf4e28e085f2/tumblr_inline_mw5sdqVmf51rprir4.png ) The secret has been revealed and the viewer is staring the secret in the face. All you know about the people beneath the floorboards is that they're looking at the man pouring the milk because their lives at at his hand.

( http://media.tumblr.com/0c6fc72843e001356a3950592a30d45f/tumblr_inline_mw5sd4twoG1rprir4.png ) This shot demonstrates blunt light, simply light and dark with not much middleground. This suggest foreshadowing, that because the darkness outweighs the light, the man will make the decision the viewer with moral integrity doesn't want him to make.

  11. Shot 1 (3:47): This shot revolves around the conversation as the camera revolves around to show the conversation from a different angle. It seems to be a turning point as the officer slowly becomes more aggressive in his questioning, boring into the farmer's fortitude.
Shot 2 (4:43): This shot shows the farmer at first, then slowly moves down to show the family of Jews the farmer is sheltering. The shot shows how the farmer is the family's lifeline, as the individual's eyes are made very visible as they stare up at the conversation.
Shot 3 (10:40): This shot shows the intensity of the stare down between the farmer and the officer. The camera slowly zooms into each of the people's faces, showing the officer's glare and the farmer's faltering.

  12. from 4:30 5:07 the camera slowly pans to the ground starting from the farmer and continuing along the leg and foot of the nazi and finally under the floor boards to the jews. This sequence of shots depicts how the modern eye would see the roles of these people. The man attempting to save the jews is at the top like a saint, the nazi is crushing the jews, and the jews are at the bottom, going through hell.
shot 2:The last shots of the scene depict the farmer finally cracking under the eye of the jew hunter, the shot occurs at 10:40 and it is a really powerful shot. the farmer is crying because he knows that the jew hunter has won, he knows that the people he is hiding will all die, and he breaks down.
shot 3: at 3:40 the shot is of the jew hunter and the farmer sitting across from each other at a table, the lighting of this shot is what makes it special, the jew hunter is in almost complete darkness, indicating that he is evil, while the farmer resides in bright light, indicating he is almost saint-like

  13. My first shot is the reveal of the Jews under the floorboards on 4:54. It causes a lot of tension because it shows that the entire first half of the scene was completely tense, unlike it looks, and it revealed that one of the characters is a lot more knowledgeable than he seems. By slowing down the camera and making the shot smoothly reveal the hidden Jews, it organizes the shot to give it real visual weight and meaning. The second shot is at 9:23 where the Nazi has the pipe out. It acts in the opposite of the other scene, where it releases a lot of that built up tension with some comedy. The way the shot is composed makes it really simple to see the differences in power between the two characters, and the light in the center adds more of that weight to the meaning behind it. The final shot at 10:40 really adds a lot of these ideas together, rebuilding the tension and creating a sense of power for this character. It is the climax of the scene, and since the man is shrouded in darkness, it really gives the aura that the scene will not end well. In this shot especially the director uses a great example rule of thirds. This only adds to the weight.

  14. from the beginning of he video to 12 seconds, The farmer is in the light making him the more lighter or less evil character. on the other hand, the german officer is sitting in the shadow putting a more dark, evil look on him. at 5:10, the shot shows the hidden people under the floor boards looking up at the conversation. this shows how the people feel trapped not only under the floorboards but also are depicted as literally below the germans. At 3:17, the farmer is smoking his pipe and at 9:24, the officer is smoking his pipe. This change shows the tension between the two and shows the shift in power in the conversation. In the beginning the farmer has the upper hand and keeps a calm composure. Near the end, the officer makes the farmer give up his secret about hiding people in his house.

  15. 1) from 6:26 to 6:29 where he drinks the milk; the milk is pulled out of the light coming from above the table to the dark shadows in which the Nazi captain is sitting and goes from white to a dark grey-ish color

    2) from 1:50-1:58 Where both men are looking over the papers, both of the men are sitting at the table, and so they are partially both seated in the light that is coming form above the table; however, they are also both seated partially in the shadows; the lighting conveys that they both have things to hide: The father has to protect his family, and the captain is trying to pretend that what he is doing is righteous

    3) from 5:00 to 5:12, where the rest of the family is revealed to be hiding under the floorboards; there is a sliver of light that illuminates their eyes through the floor, and shows that the father has something he's trying to protect.

  16. At 4:41 there is a reveal shot that shows the Jewish people in the floor boards down below. This adds to the tension & mood of the scene.
From the start at 0:00 there is an intense light coming down between two men in the shadows. This forces the viewer to pay attention to the two men and the conversation they are having.
At 4:34 the camera zooms in on the paper the man is writing on. It shows the names and then continues in on the ages of the people.

  17. 0:55-1.26 shows the light in the window, and on the other side of the scene, its dark because of the German guy. Further creating the feeling of a dark evil while the outside is very light, the inside is very dark.
4:44-4:50 shows a line down of his leg down to the floor and the lines on his pants showing the people he's hiding
4:30-4:33 shows the contrast between the print and the paper of what he's writing and what he's already written down. It shows how he already knows the names and is checking them off and now just getting the ages.

  18. at 3;05 the lighting and closeup shot really show the dark nature of the seen, lwe really see the emotions drawn out in this scene
4:30 really shows that the man is evil, as he takes notes, and the focus is really nice
from 10;29 onwards, there is a slight dolly zoom, but it really is effective in conveying the hard nature of the scene

  19. In the intro from around 1:00-1:30 had amazing lighting through the window as well as where The German officer was put in the shadows. This German general in the shadows gives him an extremely eerie and sinister look, while the German man is in the light and shadows are cast on his face showing the sweat and seriousness of the situation. At around 3:00 minutes into the clip, this is very evident. Around 4:40, the use of continuity of the camera going from the captain down to the hiding Jews gives the audience a real sense of how close the Jews are to the General and gives a very tangible sensation by showing the floorboards and depth. At about 10 minutes into the film, there is a very good use of the dolly to portray the whole setting and the use of lighting and shadows.

  20. 2:02

In this shot, both men are only partially illuminated, meaning both men have areas of their bodies in the shadows, representing how both have things to hide, such as the Jews protected by the farmer.

    3:45

It follows the conversation as the camera changes position to show the conversation from a different angle. There is also a figurative change in angle at this point because the officer becomes more aggressive.

    10:07

Here, the camera stays stationary for a good length of time. It mirrors the officers slowing attempts at cracking the farmer. He takes his time talking, which makes the farmer nervous

  22. During the beginning of the scene around 1:00 - 1:20 the lighting was situated to create a scary shadow around the German officer and the light reflecting from the German officer showed the seriousness of the situation. During 4:41 there was a shot of the Jewish people under the floor board that created and added to feeling of suspense. At about ten minutes into the scene there was a good use of the dolly shot to reveal the setting and the use of different techniques to portray the mood of the character.

  23. In the beginning 1:00-1:30 had great lighting through the window. The german officer had shadows on his face. The shadow on the officer shows confidence while the mans shadow shows sweat on his face and how this situation is very serious. At 3:06 the lighting and the closeup shot shows a dark seen of nature showing the strong emotion. At 4:00 it shows the paper and how the officer is an evil man. it shows that he already knows the names but is checking them off and and writing down there ages.

  24. 1. The camera moves down and shows people underneath the floor; tells audience that there are people hiding, and how close they are.
    2. The shot where the jewish person lights the cigar; the light shows his face
    3. The shot where zoom into the paper; shows age, and shows how real the paper was.

  25. The darkness of the entire scene gives the viewer a dark and eerie feeling of suspense. The pan to go from the two men talking to the Jews hiding underneath the floorboards at 4:40 is an amazing shot because it gives you an idea of the setting as a whole. There is also a lot of symbolism because Jews are considered inferior. The German Officer is in the darkness at first and when he reveals that he is aware that the man is hiding Jews, he is put into the light and "revealed" more clearly just as the Jews had just been revealed. This is at 10:56. In the scene before the farmer gives in, around 10:34, there is a long stationary shot where the suspense builds because you are continuously looking into the mans glare.

  26. In the first minute of the scene, the lighting provided emphasis on the mood of the scene, by portraying the seriousness of the situation. I also noticed from 3:30 to 4:30 the camera changed angles to display the perspective of the actual character. And lastly, near the end of the fourth minute, the Jews are shown under the floor board which exhibits the reality of the predicament and the possible outcome that could result.

  27. 3:04-3:25: This shot shows the farmer lighting the cigar. The fire from the match lights up his face, having a strong visual impact on the viewer. The focus is drawn to the fire and the man's face.
4:31-4:30: The shot shows the German's pen writing down that Amos was 9-10 years old. The texture of the paper is seen, so the viewer can almost feel the crispness of the paper and the pen's ink that is laid down.
4:40-5:06: The camera slowly pans downward from the farmer's face to beneath the floor, where the two men are hiding. Because they are underneath the floor, the lighting is dark; only their eyes are visible. Their eyes show the fear that they are feeling. The viewer can almost feel their fear through the lighting of their eyes.

  28. During the beginning of the scene around 1:00 - 1:30 the lighting was situated to create a creepy shadow around the German officer and the light reflecting from the German officer showed the seriousness of the situation. During 4:40 there was a shot of the jewish family under neath the floor which gave the viewer a suspensful feeling. During the ending of the scene the use of the dolly is great.

  29. Shot 1 (3:29): The light from the table illuminates the two figures with an eerie glow, creating an emotional effect on the viewer. The Nazi is in more of a dark of a light, clearly differentiating the good vs evil characters.

Shot 2 (4:40): The camera pans from the man to the Jews under the floorboards. The light gradually decreases as the camera moves down, showing that the Jews are always hiding in the darkness. Also, the Jews being forced to hide beneath the floorboards represents that the Jews are below everyone else both literally and figuratively.

Shot 3 (10:40): This shot goes back and forth between zooming in on the two men's faces. It creates a feeling of intensity. It also gives the Nazi power over the man since he is in control of the conversation. There is a mix of emotions when the man admits to sheltering Jews, since he is doing something selfish rather than selfless. He is giving up the lives of a Jewish family to save himself.

  30. Shot 0:00 to 0:16 was a great shot, I loved how everything was dark but then there was a halo of white around the milk which spread light around the shot. Shot 3:05 to 3:28 of when the farmer was lighting his pipe was a great shot with a lot of value, it is very dark but the pipe gives it a warm glow. Shot 4:40 t0 5:06 was the most memorable shot, of the pan down under the floorboards revealing the Jews. It was very cool how it split the wood in half, most likely done by taking two different shots and editing them to make them look like the same shot. The faces are darkened and only lit by a strip of light from the floorboard crack, which adds major suspense to the scene.

  31. 1) 10:12 Shows the German officer alone in a black background. It puts the focus on him and highlights the emotion on his face which gives a feeling of power.
    2) 4:32 Shows the officer writing the ages next to the names. The names show rhythm in the shot.
    3) 5:11 shows the Jewish people under the floor with their eyes between the cracks. This shows that they are trapped and are powerless to what they are watching. The shot uses good direction.

  32. 1:30
In this shot, half of the german man's arm is in the light while the rest of his body is in the dark. This is giving the feeling that the man is pretending to be somewhat kind to the farmer, but he is actually evil and the purpose of his visit is not positive.
    3:48
This shot is at a different angle and puts the german officer almost completely in the dark because he is getting closer to the purpose of his visit and it is becoming more apparent on how aggressive he is willing to be.
    4:40-5:00
This is a reveal shot of the Jewish fugitives that are hiding underneath the floorboards. You can see that the majority of the people are underneath the German officer showing that the officer is above him, both literally and in a social order.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 3:53- 4:20 has a circular dolly shot that shows the shifting of power between the two men. It literally shifts the balance of the shot and adds more weight to the Nazi's side.
4:43- 4:56 Is a pan down shot that shows the two different worlds, the Ubermench and the untermench. It also establishes the social hierarchy.
10:38 has the Nazi the complete focus, and has an entirely black background. It creates and evil meaning and suggests that he is the only thing standing in the way of sending people to the void.

  34. there was a pan at 3:55 that went around the German officer. It gave the shot more intense, and showed how important it is. there was a scene where it showed the Jewish guy's eyes from under the floorboard. It showed us how they are in such a small space and how scared they are about the inspector.

  35. 00:13

Light seems balanced as the "JewHunter" is in the darkness in the right upper corner of the shot, and the victim (person being hunted) is in the light in the lower left corner. Therefore, the shot gives a feeling that the one being hunted is closer to the audience and overall the one who the audience should be rooting for in the shot.

    1:17
There are moments of light flashes in the composition. It seems like these light flashes are included to emphasize what the "Jew Hunter" says. It highlights moments of tension that the audience wouldn't be able to recognize otherwise.

    4:59-5:03
The camera movements leading to this shot give a feeling of unexpected suspense. The shot slowly blurs the house and emphasizes the part of the shot under the floorboards. Only the audio of the discussion of above is what the viewer can understand about what is happening above for a moment. However, the it flips to show the hiding people's eyes through the floor boards with darkness cloaking there faces in the shot, while light comes from the area where the discussion is happening. Overall, the slant of the floorboards in the shot, the monochrome lighting, and the eyes peering through the floorboards convey the sense of despair the refugees(the hiding Jews).

  36. At 0:00 the over the shoulder shot makes a dramatic effect and the power of the scene. My other favorite shot is 4:40 when the shot goes from the Nazi's pant leg all the way down to the Jews in the basement. It shows how the Jews are considered inferior to the Nazi in society at that time, and that the Jews are right under him. Also, shot 10:40 when it goes back between good vs. evil and evil wins over good, and good breaks down in desperation.

  37. 10:10-10:16, This shot is of the military guy who are out to find the Jews, with a totally black background. The black background symbolizes the dark age and what he will do to the Jews when and if he finds them.

04:45-05:00, It is a reveal shot of the escape hidden Jews that were hiding under the floorboards. It shows how scared the Jews were and what later will happen to them, it is also dark which foreshadows the dark ages.

3:35-3:40- He starts to write things down like he cares about what the guy has to say, but he already knows where all the Jews were hiding, but wants to be discrete about it.

  38. 3:50 is a very interesting shot with the circle pan around the two men using the dolley. The movement of the camera really draws your eye to the contrast between the two men with the farmer being illuminated in light and flushed with warmer colors, while the Nazi is shown as darker and wearing all-black, representing a good vs evil feel.
4:40 is one of the most successful shots of this clip. The lines of his pant leg lead the eggs down to his foot and the floor board, then it is turned into a "reveal" shot as the camera extends past the floor board into the dark celler hiding the Jewish girl. This is an awesome shot and also a symbol for the lowly and trapped position of the Jews.
10:20 displays the mix of emotions between the two men as they flash between the two different faces and the zoom into them. Both shots darken as they zoom in and the Nazi's power over the other man is displayed by his smug look on his face versus the nervous look on the face of the farmer.

  39. In the first minute of the clip, the over the shoulder shot is used to portrait the German officer from the shoulder of the french farmer, but when it comes to show the french farmer, the camera is not put on the shoulder of the German officer, but rather in front of the German. this creates a feeling of visual tension, with the imbalanced shot types.
The second shot, starting at 3:50 has the camera rotate around the two men talking, but in reality, the camera angel is actually primarily rotating around the German officer creating a sense that he is in charge even though it is the french man's house. This adds a imbalance of proportion, that compared to the frenchman the SS officer is in charge.
The third shot starts at 10:00 with the lighting being significantly darkened, stars to zoom into the German officer as he is offering the frenchman freedom if he gives up the jews, the farmer is obviously having a difficult time making the decision, but based on personal experience, never say no to an SS officer. this final shot uses contrast, especially with lighting.

  40. 1:57 were the dairy farmer light is shined very intense on his face. The light is very intense compared to the light shown on the Germans face on like 1:45-1:56. I believe the director used this harsh 3 rule lighting to express the severity of the situation of the dairy farmer and the German.
4:42- 5:12 reveal shot, it shows the Jews hiding underneath the floor boards and the house. Also, by putting the Jews under the German officer, it shows a social hierarchy; Jews are lower in the social rating, and are under German laws.
4:31, the carmea focuses in on the list of names that show the intensness of the jew's names

  41. The shot at 3:50 provides a steady and smooth dolly shot. It was used to show the opposing views, like a dual against each other. 4:56-5:07 where the camera moves downward below the floor where someone is eavesdropping. It only shows his eyes, where there is a slit of light that only reveals his eyes and part of his face where he covers his mouth.

  42. 3:50 The camera begins to pan around the German officer and the farmer to show the significance, intensity, and tension in this scene.
10:40 The camera slowly zooms in on each man's face to emphasize the tension of the scene and the emotion of each man. The German's stare is frightening while the farmer's slowly starts to give way to fear.
4:40 As the eggs roll to the floor boards, the camera follow them to the exact location of where the Jewish girl is hiding.
