Tuesday, December 10th - Ken Burns and Story

Please watch this video featuring Ken Burns describing 'story'.

Play Video Here

Your upcoming documentary project is not an MMJ news story, neither is it a PSA, it is a story deeply rooted in a complex and important topic. Your job is to find a unique story to tell about the topic 'Poverty in America'.

Please answer the following blogspot questions:

  1. What does Ken Burns mean by 1 + 1 =  3?
  2. What is an emotional truth according to Burns?
  3. How does he make 'the dead' come to life in his work, specifically how does he do this with Photography and Audio?
  4. Where might you find a story about Poverty in America?
  5. How do you dig to find the Poverty in American story where 1 + 1 = 3?
  6. What kind of person would make an interesting character to build story around? (ie., what about poverty from a child's perspective, or the perspective of a parent, a sister, a social worker, policeman, clergy, non-profit agency worker, historical figure, city counsel member, non-profit foundation worker).
  7. What conflicts might you find, what inciting incidents? (ie., a child who goes to school but has just lost their home, a parent coping with bills that cannot be paid, a child is too hungry to do homework, a worker who has been laid off due to corporate downsizing)
  8. What are your initial thoughts about poverty in America? What message do you think you want to convey in the story you will tell through your documentary?

  1. What Burns means by 1 + 1= 3 is that he's interested in things that are puzzling and interesting. An emotional truth is something that needed to be built up. Burns makes the dead come to life by using audio that fits the scene of the photo as well as camera techniques.
Web site developing: i have come up with some thoughts about the way the layout should look like.

  2. 1. Ken Burns means that stories are more than just simple math. One and one make more than just two because we're human, and we always walk away with something extra than just the given.
    2. Emotional truth is something you have to build. And it comes from showing people in all their complexity
    3. By panning through photographs, not just sitting one still shot over it
    4. My mom
    5. You find the cause and the result thoroughly and the moral and emotional aftereffects will follow
    6. A child in a homeless shelter on Christmas
    7. "Tell me about the trials of your life"
    8. My mom is my inspiration for this. Invision soup kitchen is a building full of stories and I'm gonna go extract them.

  3. 1. There's more than just two. There's always more to the story.
    2. Emotional truth according to burns is something you have to build
    3. He slowly moves from one side of the picture to another, not just letting it sit there.
    4. You might be able to find it in SF.
    5. How they became poor. What happened to them
    6. Parent's eyes. Someone that had something and then lost it and how they're surviving in the world now.
    7. Their company files for bankruptcy, and a parent not being able to pay off bills.
    8. There's a ton of poverty in America, and maybe somehow we can help out.

  4. 1) He means that common stories put together make one big meaningful story.
    2) It's where real people tell real stories, with emotion and truth in it. He means that this is where good documentaries start.
    3) Ken Burns pours his own tears and emotions into the stories. He is genuinely interested in the story.
    4) On the streets of San Francisco.
    5) Find a whole bunch of stories and turn it into one huge story that tells an overall story.
    6) I think a person who has recently gotten out of poverty would be interesting to interview, as well as ex-homeless.
    7) I think job loss, drug usage, alcoholism, over-dependence on welfare are some inciting incidents I will find.
    8) I think that poverty is not only a chronic problem in America, but also in the world. Living in Silicon Valley, we are sheltered from the harsh realities of the world and of poverty. I think I want to show that poverty in the Silicon Valley is a real thing, and it is within a few miles of school.

  5. 1. He means he is interested in the hard to understand aspects of life like emotional things.
    2. An emotional truth is something you have to build. It is manipulating the feelings of the viewer.
    3. He shows a picture of the dead and then tells their story.
I am doing the website so I have not thought much about the Poverty in America prompt, but you could find the story in a homeless war veteran or in an immigrant barely scraping by. You could find an incident like an immigrant arriving in America with no money and unable to get a job because they are not a citizen. I think poverty is terrible and if i were doing a documentary I would portray that.

  7. 1. He means that 1+1=3 is the real story because its not simple.
    2. Emotional truth is that people can change.
    3. He makes the dead come back to life by bringing them back into his documentaries and talking about the impact they had on society.
    4. You can find it in documentaries, and in modern times.
    5. You try and focus on the big story, instead of just the small details of it.
    6. A person who is a good guy, but has a dark side, and a unique back story.
    7. Conflicts such as the simple things in life like what to eat, paying the bills, or getting arrested.
    8. I think poverty in America is sad. I would want to show people in that kind of a documentary of the affect poverty has on other people, and that it can't be ignored.

  8. 1. Ken Burns means that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, as in the bigger picture of the situation or story.
    2. Emotional truth is the storyteller's manipulation and the byproduct of the best of the stories, emotional truth is something you have to build.
    3. By telling stories of "the dead", he makes the dead come to life with his work. By panning through photographs and including audio clips that match, it brings to life the past.
    4. I can find a story about Poverty in America if I go to a poverty stricken area, such as Detroit, Michigan.
    5. I can interview individuals that have lived through the experience in the area and can connect all their experiences into a single story about poverty in America.
    6. A policeman in poverty stricken areas would be a very interesting character because he understands why people fall back to crime (in order to support their family), but at the same time, he must stop it.
    7. A father who cannot support his family with just his job and welfare is a great conflict and inciting incident. This gives the man reason to be a criminal and why he does what he does.
    8. I believe the gap between the rich and the poor in America is increasing greatly. I want to convey the message of how tough life is for the poor in America in order to show people in "rich bubbles" (Saratoga) what the real world looks like.

  10. 1) He means that 1+1=3 is where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts (e.g. in a bible story the backround focus is always on God)

    2) An emotional truth is a story that sincerely moves people; All story is manipulation, however, an emotional truth is a story that sincerely moves people to feel something.

    3) He uses moving audio and various photos of things to enhance the experience

    4) In a homeless shelter

    5) Ask children of poor families what their lives are like, ask social workers about some of their most moving experiences

    6) From a teacher of a homeless child

    7) A child who goes to school but lives in a homeless shelter

    8) My initial thoughts are that poverty is a very big issue in America and it needs to be dealt with

  11. Ken Burns means by 1+1=3 is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Ken Burns says that emotional truth is manipulation and is something that is built up. He makes the dead come to life by building up the emotional truth. You could find a story about poverty by looking for a place that is not known for poverty to open peoples eyes. You can make an interesting character by looking for someone who knows the truth but is not well known. the conflicts i would look at would be drugs, money, homelessness, and education. I believe that poverty in america is evident but is a small problem compared to other countries.

  12. 1. I feel he means that we should try to get the biggest bang for our buck. We can do this by using parts to make an amazing whole.
    2. Emotional truth is a bi-product of the best of our stories. It's something that needs to be built through a story.
    3. He makes the dead come to life in his work through the art of story telling. He uses different audio clips and nostalgic video to bring back a sense of the ambiance that was set.
    4. One can find a story about poverty in ghettos of New York, ghettos of Chicago, and parts of Detroit.
    5. One needs to find the smaller things that make the whole of a city, the poverty in cities that make the city a whole with the poverty and the rich are what make 1+1=3.
    6. Definitely a policeman's perspective in a poverty stricken area would be an incredible point of view as he faces dilemmas of stealing and what not of people who need it to survive and what not. It would be an extremely unique point of view to be from that of a police officer.
    7. We could find a moral dilemma of a sensitive police officer seeing a child he has known begin stealing for his family for there is nothing else he can do to survive
    8. I think about poverty the way Ghandi thinks about poverty - that it is one of the worst and most degrading things that could happen to a human. I think the story could convey a sense of sympathy.

    7) Losing family members, depression, loss of house, gambling, death, drugs, addiction
    8) It's rampant throughout the country. It needs to be fixed in order to get our nation out of this economic downswing we are going through. I want to convey the depressing lives poor people have to live through.

4.) You could find them in urban big cities where there are many homeless.
5.) You could find relations between different sufferers of poverty and base the documentary on how their similarities affect their lives.
6.) An interesting story would be a police officer's perspective in a poverty-stricken area. It would be interesting to learn how he deals with the problem and how he feels about it.
7.) An inciting incident might be the police officer coming across an orphan out in the snow with little clothing on when it is a blizzard.
8.) I think poverty in America is often overlooked since America is portrayed as such a successful and perfect country. In my documentary, I want to exhibit that poverty is ever present in America; we just don't come across it often due to our location.

  30. 1. He means that sometimes the truth is not obvious. 1+1=2 is an obvious truth, but 1+1=3 and how it becomes three is not obvious. There are factors hidden and avoided from 2 to three that must be discussed by a story.
    2. The emotional truth is that people must always bring themselves to change.
    3. The music and images he uses is nostalgic in the sense that re-evokes feeling of the past through historical context.
    4. Poverty and American can be discovered by studying interviewing people on the streets, reading news articles, think tanks, and journals; however, these preliminary research techniques will only give you the surface of the issue.
    5. Actual interviews with people may be one of the best options. Also, following the story of a poverty stricken individual may provide insight that makes the whole of poverty bigger than its parts.
    6. A person who's escaped from poverty or had at least has tried to. A great example of a real life story (but not a documentary) is the Pursuit of Happiness.
    7. A person finds himself living off food stamps because he can't find a job or possibly unhealthy neighborhoods and areas where a person can't pull themselves out of poverty because they can't get the best education or resources(a compare and contrast between communities).
    8. America provides more social mobility than other countries. With tax provided education, health insurance, and social security, the United States is designed to give everybody equal opportunity.
Poverty usually strikes in America for the following reasons:
Certain people are not willing to push themselves to get out of poverty.
Access to this quality global entitlements such as education are not readily available to due negative influences such as race division in communities, tradition, or outside influence(such as parental for a child trying to go to school).

  31. 1. Ken Burns means that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. He ultimately means the bigger picture is more key than just the little bits of details.
    2. Emotional truth is the storyteller's manipulation and throughout the project one needs to gradually implement that emotional truth in there. It's an important necessity that needs to be included.
3.By telling the stories of the dead, he basically brings us to a time that we are not familiar with, as if we were actually there. Ultimately, he brought them to life in our eyes.
    4. I would be able to go to a poverty stricken place such as the third world countries or even nearby in the bay area, Oakland.
    5. I would be able to interview those who were unfortunate in poverty stricken areas. It would provide a lot of insight with what's actually the bigger picture.
    6. A good story would be one who endures the poverty they lived in and somehow end up being successful in their careers.
    7. It would be a child who has a natural gifted mind and has the potential to do great things but due to their neighborhood or to low income, they can't get anywhere in life.
    8. The gap between rich and the poor has never been greater. I initially had some idea but Mr. Davey provided the statistics and that's when truly believed it. I want to convey that although we live in a great city like Saratoga, not everywhere is like this. We might think being poor is living in apartments but people don't even have a place to sleep or even food on their plates. It's terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. Ken Burns means by this is that things are complicating and interesting.
    2. Emotional truth is the storytellers manipulation through complex feelings.
    3. Ken Burns uses old pictures and voices that seem to know what they are talking about. It is bringing a new story to life.
    4. I may find a story about poverty in the Philippines or Africa. There may even be one in SF!
    5. I would find a complex story and make it seem as in depth and real as possible.
    6. A good story would make a strong character where he starts somewhere and gets somewhere further.
    7. A good story might be a lonely war veteran who has no help now that he has gotten home and served for his country.
    8. I think I am way to spoiled and I feel just lucky that I can live in Saratoga. I want to look more in depth into the poverty I know so little about.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. What Burns means by 1+1=3 is that the entire project together is greater than the individual parts.
    2. Emotional truth is how the storyteller explains the "situation" to the audience, how to manipulate the audience in the way he wants to.
    3. Ken Burns adds pictures of the dead and integrated quotes to make the audience either feel bad or hate the dead man. The primary sources are also invaluable.
    4. Im guessing that you could find a story about poverty is in the US archives during the great depression.
    5. I would make a good project about poverty by getting information from the National archives, but the main info would be interviews from poor people.
    6. I think an interesting story would revolve around the life of a poor teenager maybe around 13-15 because the audience realizes that this kid really has no choice, that he was born into poverty and the audience would be able to connect better.
    7. The conflicts that I would expect would probably along the lines of: if the kid going through poverty has enough food to eat, or how school is going with him, how are his parents acting around him and if they support him.
    8. I believe that poverty in the US is increasing because the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, the middle class in dying, and the worst case scenario is the united states being turned into what it was during the great depression, where there is only the rich, and only the poor. In the documentary i want to relate US poverty now vs US poverty during the depression.

  34. 1. There is more than just 2 parts of the story to make a simple equation like 1+1=2, there are other factors that contribute to making the big picture larger than just the sum of little details.
    2. Emotional truth is something you need to build that is the storyteller's manipulation.
    3. He creates a total experience by playing audio that relates to the person or a reading of their quote, etc while displaying pictures or video that display the person or event.
    4. To find a story about poverty in America, I would travel to a less affluent place like the bad areas of SF, Oakland, or LA. Also, you could go to a place where a natural disaster has hit, such as a tornado or hurricane.
    5. To dig deeper into the emotional aspect of poverty and tell to people about how they ended up where they were and further learn their stories.
    6. I think it would be very interesting to learn about poverty from a child's perspective because they dont get to choose the lifestyle they are born into and it is more emotionally effecting.
    7. Parents trying desperately to feed their families, getting two jobs, no help from friends and family, etc. because as hard as they work it isnt enough and is very sad

    6. I think having two main characters, one being a resident and the other being a government official who is attempting to piece the city back together.
    7. I think the pension cuts to retired families and the deaths to gang violence would be pretty heart wrenching.
    8. I think that there are people who have allowed their own personal greed to overtake them, which in turn endangers the livelihoods of others. I want people to be aware of what is going on in a city that used to be a bastion of hope in the United States of America. I want them to remember. I also want them to help.

  36. When Ken Burns says 1+1=3, he is talking about a documentary that is out of the ordinary, unlike the regular linear documentary where 1+1=2

According to Burns, there are many kinds of truths but an emotional truth is something that you have to build

For historical documentaries, Burns tries to make things that are dead, like Abraham Lincoln, Jackie Robinson, or Louis Armstrong to seem like they are not dead and that they are very alive using photography panning.

Some sources of information would be interviewed, reading articles, and journals

Interviewing people good way to get information.

A type of person that would create an interesting story would be someone that used to be in poverty and went through pain in the past but has changed

An example of a conflict could be losing friends of family members due to poverty, because this is very emotionally strong

I did not know poverty in America was this high. I think there are others like me who also did not know this, so creating a documentary showing how much of America is in poverty would be interesting

  37. 1. I think that Ken Burns is talking about an eccentric documentary because it does not have the regular linear documentary where 1 + 1 = 2.
    2. Ken Burns does this to add an emotional aspect and shows the story tellers manipulation.
    3. In historical documents, Burns makes them feel very up close and makes things appear in a lively manner.
    4. I would travel to the bad parts of L.A. because it displays not only crime but just a harder life in general.
    5. I would compare and contrast very good parts of L.A. like Beverly Hills, with much more rough parts like Compton.
    6. I think that learning about poverty in a child's perspective is a great way to learn because they are born into whatever situation they are in and they have absolutely no control over it.
    7. A conflict would be getting bullied at school, parents can't provide for the family and the child has no one really to support him mentally or physically.
    8. I think that the poverty situation in America is very complex. The top 20% consume 86% percent of our resources and I think that is ridiculous. More donations should be given and it should be more fair for everyone in the country.
